The Meeting:

Tom got a thanks from the Ed Foundation for our contribution of $2,500.  NRG has contributed $50,000 plus…big applause for our Speaker of the Day from NRG, and all that Alex probably has contributed to that process over the years.  (More on Alex later)

Marsha did the fining for Elyse.  She is very good at this which takes a special skill.  I use to do it from time to time, but that is one area that escapes me.  I suck at it.   Marsha, Joe, Elyse, Michelle, and Julie seem to have that knack.  If I missed anyone let me know.  Some of you have never tried it but you should.  It’s a knack, maybe you have it.

Shannon was fined for being at the Ellen Show.  Somehow she got to talking about her first kiss which occurred at the age of 9.  My first kiss was first grade with Jill.  I wonder if she remembers.  Tom will be getting or giving his first kiss soon.  I hope I am not involved in that process.   I think I heard someone shout at Tom the other day when he was driving and cut some guy off,  I think he was a priest.  The guy  said ….”You can Kiss My AXX, You big FXXXXXXX AXXXXXE”.  Tom laughed and said “I am President of Rotary and I am the Supreme Commander and moved on through the red light.

Joe got fined for an Oreo  Picture  that Elyse had gotten for him.  Or, maybe Elyse got fined.  Rotarians are strange at times.  (Joe has an unnatural relationship with Oreo’s).   A lot of the conversations with Joe center on Oreo’s.   He has pictures of them in his office and I am sure in his home.  He eats them and shares them from time to time.  Some people collect stamps, others coins, Joe collects Oreo pictures and memorabilia.  Late night, in the quiet of his room, Joe talks to them, and they talk back.  Odd.

Marsha brought up my magazine again, but only in relation to the beautiful pictures that are in Sheila’s New Magazine only seen overseas.   Europe is much more open about nudity.

Shirley got fined for all the work she did on the Shuttle and Marsha had lots of pictures of Shirley pulling the Shuttle, driving the Shuttle, and also some pictures of her driving the Shuttle in Space.  What a girl and what a fine -- and a fine job fining by Marsha.

Julia told the joke of the week.  I think it was about a hairy arm pit, or maybe something else.  Only girls can tell these jokes anymore.  Times change.

Tom called Gary up to the Podium to take a rare glimpse of Tom’s Power Station.  Tom thought that Gary was sad in his last bulletin and needed a hug.  He ambushed him and gave him a big hug.   I like hugs from Women, Tom is another story.   He’s sort of cute, but not really my type.  I am not use to hugging guys.   Tom went for it.  A big hug…and he lingered too long.  There might have been some inappropriate touching as well.  I am definitely not that kind of guy.    I am married too.  My wife would have laughed at the hugging only because it was Tom.  She wouldn’t laugh if he was hugging her.  He called me up and “sissified” me by demanding I hug back.  At the very time Dick and I were having a very nice conversation about how to cook Lamb and the proper seasoning to use and method of cooking.  How should it be garnished, and what plate presentation would look best.   I like to use Rosemary and some curried rice and Chutney and it seemed that Dick liked my recipe and so did Phil.  Then, I was called up for the “sissification” because of sadness, or so he says.   I am a manly man, no girlyman for me.  When Tom was through having his way with me I had to walk the gauntlet of huggers back to my humble station.  There might be some rules at the District or State Level of Rotary about this type of harassment and perhaps Tom will be counseled and reprimanded.

The Program

Scott Valentino , VP of Development for NRG

Well, what can you say about NRG?  They are a great neighbor and a great company.  They are in a tough environmentally sensitive field and they step up to the plate every time.  Our speaker spoke over and over about all of the areas that are being explored such as solar, wind, gas, and oil.  Much of it was way out of my head.   He talked about Wind Energy and that it had to be in the right place where there was lots of wind.  I wonder if they looked at somewhere next to Tom’s house.  That would be a good spot for wind energy in El Segundo

They contribute to just about everything they can to be a good neighbor.  Last year they contributed over $600,000 to charitable causes throughout the state.  To our club they contribute “Alex”.  Alex is one of those quiet unassuming guys that go around doing good deeds without asking to be noticed.  He is what I call a “Stealth Do-Gooder”.  We have a number of those in the club and he is one of the best.  He always has been and is a great Rotarian.  Those that know him know the content of his character and his cheerful attitude.  You would never know if Alex had a bad day.  When the club needs help, he responds.  He quietly buys $20 of Raffle Tickets each meeting(over $1,000 per year), and sometimes wins a $5 bottle of wine.  The giving is his prize.  Thanks NRG for giving us Alex.  Thanks Alex, for being you.

In conclusion I was humbled by the great hug off by Tom, but I should not deprive him of his joy.  Call me maybe!
