Engage Rotary, Change Lives

The meeting started like most, members introducing guests.  Dr. Michelle Introduced Brook Cavilla(sp), Mgr.  of Corporate Relations for (too much noise in the room).  Shiela introduced (sort of) Colleen from the Radison.  Shiela didn’t know her name, but fortunately Colleen did.  Chuck Perlman from the Culver City Club attended.  I think he almost has perfect attendance.  He does make up, but he has said on many occasions how much he likes our club.  He said how lively and fun it is.

Guess what!  Joe did some fining.  He got Dick (Chairman of the Board of the Herald) because there was no mention of Rotary.  Joe likes to fine.  He fined Shiela again.  Melissa was fined for continuing to Act as Rotary President.   Elyse, Elyse, Elyse.  What a gal.  She got fined for all her fine work she does with RYLA.  (Not sure if she got fined or not, but she did get mentioned).  Her and Joe have a bond now that will never be broken after their many tireless years of working together with RYLA.  It has been beautiful to watch to develop over the years.  They are One, sometimes, unless there is only one Podium, then they are Two.  Neither have ever seen a Podium they didn’t like, and want.  Some are small and can’t be shared.

We learned about a simple thing at RYLA that when things get out of hand, they say to each other “Go See Patrick”.  Or something like that.  Not sure I got this right.  Not sure I need to.  It’s kind of like having a “time out” -- to sort it out; to gather yourself; and put things back together again.  Get a perspective.  Get some rest.  Get a life.

Elyse also had Tea this month.  It was a Tea for “People of the Year”.  The Tea was put on by the Optimist club and she and others got lots of accolades.   “Tea With Elyse”.  ( a thought popped into my head that an old movie I really liked was a title called “Tea With Mussolini)  A great watch if you are interested.

Oh, did I mention that Elyse is going to Re Key the Queen Mary.  Oh Well.  Nothing new in Elyse’s day.  I suppose there are bigger boats.  None more famous.  One Queen to another.  It’s fitting.

Julie told the Joke.  A Good one.

Melissa has the Cards.  She has a simple filing cabinet she carries and it is organized by month.  Elyse was impressed with her organization skills and said so.  I don’t think there was a lock on the file however?  I see a deal being made to keep those files and cards safe, you need a lock.

Sammy and the Community Wellness Day.  I gotta tell you he is such an inspiration for me.  He tirelessly is pursuing the Wellness day.  I thought he would run out of gas.  He just keeps amping up every week like that Rabbit that keeps on going, and going and going.   He is “always” positive.  He just keeps raising money for the Day, every day, day after day.  Run Sammy Run.   You never hear about the bad days he surely must have, only the good days and the good guys and all the help he gets.   Tough to do, but he is doing it.  Jack Weber is the Rotary Lead Person if you have help or advice…call him.

The District 5280 Assembly is May 18, 2013 at 7AM.  This is a very important gathering of all members, especially those that will hold an office in Len’s year.  Let’s support him as best we can.  It’s a small thing to do.  Thus far the following have signed up.  Len Bonilla, Ted Tokunow, Melissa Albers, Gary Wilson, Dean Seligman, Jack Weber, Elyse Beardsley.

Special NoteJulie told us that Dean came to Coopers Little League Baseball game and bought all the kids and parents Pizza afterward.  Julie gave Dean a Team Sponsors Plaque…and he was grateful.  You give, you get.  Simple formula, (but precise) and always works.  If you are sad, give something to someone.  You will feel better.

Will Barnes

Speaking of giving and feeling better we need to help our fellow Rotarian Will Barnes.  Tom sent an email around earlier in the day and told us about Will’s situation and he is in a life threatening spot.  He needs (and can get) a double lung transplant, but needs some money.  All these charities need money and we always do our best to support them, especially those that are close to home.  Will is close to home.  He always inspired me with his good cheer, his gentle soul, and thoughtfulness. Everyone that knows will loves will.  Again, he needs some help.  Go here:  http://www.gofundme.com/2rbbeo

Thought:  I am tired of saying good bye to fellow Rotarians for the last year.  Perhaps we can save one.  Let’s give it a good try.

The Speaker

Julie, MBA and a JD (another low achiever) from Santa Clara University.  Graduated Cum Laude and is now dedicating her life to fighting Pancreatic Cancer.  Her father died within a few months of being diagnosed and apparently that is the way it works.  Cancer is bad period, and this one is about the worst.  It too needs funds.  Rather than me give you what she told me I think a simple link to the web site should help.  http://www.pancan.org/
