The Meeting and the Program

This is such a very special meeting because it allows Rotary to recognize those elite individuals in our community who serve with distinction.  Sometimes I think we (me) forget how important it is to recognize.  To notice those people who quite frankly, never get noticed.  I have a few awards that I “earned” in my past, and was thrilled at the time to be “noticed’, to have received recognition for my efforts.  I gave whatever plaque or certificate I received an “aw shucks, no big deal”, but I lied.  It was a big deal then and now.  Even today when I am rummaging through the garage I will find in an old box a certificate that says “Most Valuable Senior”.  “Aw shucks, no big deal”,  but I will smile, pick it up and look at it again and my mind will return to that time to what I thought was a “simpler time”.   Then I will put it back in the box and tuck it carefully away until the next time.  My eyes may be a little moist and I am grateful that someone, sometime, took the time, to say thank you.

Lots of representatives of local politicians came to this special day to give the certificates that will end up in a garage someday, to be remembered at a later time.  The house was loaded with El Segundo Dignitaries.  We had representatives from Henry Waxman’s office, From Don Knabe’s office, from Ted Lieu’s office and from Steven Bradfords Office and our newly appointed mayor, Bill Fisher along with council members Mayor Pro Tem Carl Jacobs, Marie Felhower(sp), and Dave Atkinson, City Manager Greg Carpenter, Police Chief Mitch Tavera, Fire Chief Kevin Smith, Superintendent Jeff Yantz, Postmaster Dena Motta.  I may have forgotten someone but what a cast of El Segundo Superstars were there to honor our very special guests.   If some catastrophic event took place at the a Hacienda that day the Southbay and El Segundo in particular would be in deep trouble.  With all that talent in the room it makes you realize how important it is to honor those that do the work to make our city so very special.

It is really fun to see these people all under one roof.  You can tell there is obvious respect for each other and they are quick on their feet and the meeting is always lively.

Thanks El Segundo
