Opening

After the Pledge of Allegiance Melissa had a thought for the day that pretty much said to "quiet the mind" when it needs it.  It’s important!  Every day.

We are only at our best when our mind is at ease.  As I looked around the room at my fellow Rotarians I knew that this would not be easy for most.  I know Phil and Tom's synapses were mis-firing inside those skulls left and right.  I could hear it and see it in their minds as they wandered from thought to though.  No telling what goes on in their heads.  Quiet them down...no way.  Fireworks have to run their course.

Some of us in the room took the words to heart and "quieted the mind down".  I know Frank can do that.  (Have you ever seen someone so calm).  Sheila is pretty calm, unless her phone goes off and then she picks through her purse looking for the intrusion and everyone else is relieved that it was not their phone and happy she get’s busted and frowned upon.

A lot of people reach for their phone every time there is one going off and breathe a sign of relief that it is not theirs and that Kevin is not in the room (if that’s true).  Kevin doesn’t like phones going off, but Joe does.  Kevin thinks it may be a fire and that is not good in his profession; Joe thinks of it as a sign of commerce being transacted.  That’s what’s neat about Rotary, different views, different religions, different politics…all coming together in harmony in the same room

Visitors

My brother in law was in town from Prince Edward Island, Canada and had lots of fun and commented on how nice it is to see meetings begin with the Pledge of Allegiance.  He is a dual citizen of the US and Canada.  (Be the first person to send me an email giving me the name of a Canadian singer who sang a song called “Restless” and win an extra raffle ticket for the next meeting).

Gordon Shurtlaf was vising from the LaJolla area with his wife.  He has not missed a Rotary Meeting in 41 years and has made up in over 280 separate clubs.  He had a Rotary Banner across his chest and Tom told me he wearing Rotary Underwear.  There is nothing wrong with that.  The 41 years is amazing enough but 280 separate makeup meetings is 5.4 years of weekly meetings at a different club.  These old timers really have some records.  Ed came to 3 meetings in a row one time, and we were glad to have him.  Which Ed was it?

Awards

Our club won many awards.,,,.many awards were given…many awards were accepted.  I looked at the awards on the District Web Site and was not sure what they all were.  Maybe you had to be there.  Tom was there and he can explain them to you. I invite you to go look for yourselves go there now by clicking here.

Program

“Come Fly With Me”  --  Another Great program about our very important neighbor to the North known as LAX.  This was a history in pictures of the airport going back to the beginning in 1928 to the present.  It was set with background music from the time, with the tune changing a few times to keep pace with the years.  It started with “Begin the Beguine”  Marsha started singing with her “after hours sexy torch voice” and pretty soon Elyse joined in and the fun began.  Marsha is a singer, Elyse is a Locksmith.

I have often said that “Rotarians can have fun with a Stick”.  Elyse would want you to know that her stick was bigger than yours and Joe would want to know “do you see the stick as a tool, or as a weapon” and that would tell you a lot about your personality and the trajectory of your career.

Phil and I were wondering what a “Buguine” was.  We thought it was a sweet pastry that you can get in the morning with coffee when you are hung over in New Orleans.

The program moved along and a couple of surfing kind of jingles took the background vocals featuring that famous hit “LA International Airport” by the Great Susan Ray.

It was a very fun and interesting presentation and our visitor from La Jolla asked Ethyl would she come down to La Jolla to give the same presentation.  He said that she would be rewarded with a glass of fine wine.  She said she would take a pass but give him the video disk.  My guess is that Ethyl and her time would be worth a lot more than fine wine and we are grateful that she took the time to visit our club.  Also, a big thanks for Shirley for a fine month of presentations and congratulations on being the Rotarian of the month.  You are very special.
