Teacher Mini Grants
El Segundo Rotary Club awarded a total of $7,500 in mini-grants to 50 wonderful teachers in the El Segundo School District. These grants allow teachers to buy teaching supplies that improve the quality of education. Examples of items the teachers purchase with these grants include sheet music and metronomes, calculators, counting blocks, timers, privacy dividers, art supplies, books, and subscriptions to online educational programs. We could not do this without the support of our community. Thank you to our teachers, and thank you to our supporters for attending our (many) events, buying our raffle tickets (and rubber duckies) and donating to our club.
Rise Against Hunger
On 10/12/19, the ES Rotary packed food for Rise Against Hunger, a humanitarian organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable. Many people showed up to volunteer and we packed 10,000 meals to help those in need.

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of the 2019 Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest! El Segundo Rotary is proud to have supported this wonderful program for over 70 years in partnership with our firefighter heroes here in El Segundo! This year's theme is: Not all Heroes Wear Capes!

Did You Know?                    #Randomfacts
Did you know that Jack-o’-lanterns were once made out of turnips, beets and potatoes — not pumpkins?

The jack-o'-lantern comes from an old Irish tale about a man named Stingy Jack. According to folklore, Stingy Jack was out getting sloshed with the Devil when Jack convinced his drinking partner to turn himself into a coin to pay for the drinks without spending money. Jack then put the Devil, shaped like a coin, into his pocket, which also contained a silver cross that kept the Devil from transforming back. Jack promised to free the Devil as long as the Devil wouldn’t bother him for a year, and if he died, the Devil could never claim his soul. Jack tricked the Devil again later, getting him to pick a piece of fruit out of a tree and then carving a cross into the bark when the Devil was in the branches. This trick bought Jack another 10 years of devil-free living.

When Jack finally died, God decided he wasn’t fit for heaven, but the Devil had promised never to claim his soul for hell. So Jack was sent off to roam Earth with only a burning coal for light. He put the coal into a turnip as a lantern, and Stingy Jack became "Jack of the Lantern" or “Jack o’ Lantern.” Based on this myth, the Irish carved scary faces into turnips, beets and potatoes to scare away Stingy Jack or any other spirits of the night.

ROTARY FLOAT IN ROSE PARADE

The Rotary International float in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade is undoubtedly the largest public relations project of the Rotary clubs of the United States and Canada. Since 1924 a Rotary float has been entered 18 times including every year since 1981. The famous Pasadena, California, parade is seen by an estimated 125 million people via worldwide television.

Funds for the construction of the Rotary parade entry are voluntarily given by Rotarians and clubs in the U.S. and Canada. The cost of designing, constructing and flower covering a Rose Parade float begins at about $120,000.

A multi-district Rotary committee in Southern California (including our own District 5280) coordinates planning of the Rotary float and provides hundreds of volunteer hours of service. The Rotary float must portray the annual parade theme, usually depicting one of the worldwide service programs of Rotary International. For 2020, the float theme is "Hope Connects the World".

Each New Year's Day, Rotarians take pride in seeing their attractive float and realize they have shared in its construction by contributing a dollar or two to this beautiful public relations project.
