January is quickly coming to a close and this means that we are now only two months out to our upcoming Malt Madness beer & wine event coming up on March 27th. Planning for this fundraiser is now underway and we need your help! We are looking for Sponsors, donations, and beer, wine and food vendors. If you have any leads, please contact Dean Seligman or visit the event page and following the links for documents and details. This is a major fundraiser for our club and we need the support of our members to help make this happen smoothly. Thank you in advance for your support!

Meeting 1/23/2020
Another great meeting thanks to Elizabeth Bloom and her passionate talk about the challenges of Dyslexia. We learned about the difficulties that one faces when coping with this condition. We also heard from Rotarian Dave Riemann who told us a little bit about himself.
Meeting 1/16/2020

Today, Miranda presented her life story via an original poem. Quite amazing! Also, Dennis gave us an overview of his professional experience with human contact and interaction which provided unique insights into improving business and life.

Did you know that Saturday January 25th was Chinese New Year?

According to Wikipedia, Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in mainland China and is one of several lunar New Years in Asia. Observances traditionally take place from the evening preceding the first day of the year to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February. In 2020, the first day of the Chinese New Year was on Saturday, 25 January, initiating the Year of the Rat.

Rotary - USAID Water & Sanitation Partnership reaches 10 years of Service.

Since 2009, Rotary has been working to fix deficiencies in water and sanitation in various countries through a partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The partnership combines the business skills and local community leadership of Rotarian volunteers with the technical expertise of USAID. Rotary is contributing $9 million to the $18 million partnership; outside of eradicating polio, it is Rotary’s largest partnership effort. “We wondered how these two organizations could come together and exploit the synergy between them,” says Rotarian Ron Denham, a member of the Rotary-USAID steering committee.

Ghana was one of three pilot countries when the program kicked off. Projects were implemented in two phases: Phase 1 concluded in 2013, and Phase 2 will end in 2020. “As a result of this partnership, we’ve been able to reach out to some very deprived communities,” says Emmanuel Odotei, WASH management specialist for USAID/Ghana. “If USAID had tried to do this alone, or if Rotary had done it alone, we would never have achieved as much as we have today.”

The focus of the program has been on accomplishing three goals: improving sanitation and hygiene in schools and health facilities; increasing community access to safe drinking water; and advocating for ample government financing of WASH — that is, water, sanitation, and hygiene.
