The new Rotary year started off with Eloise's first meeting as president on 7/11/19. The subject of our next meeting on 7/18/19 will discuss details of the Dig Deep Clean Water Humanitarian Project. Tawny Valencia will be presenting. Frank Glynn will also give us a brief craft talk and bring raffle prizes.

Our next big event is Movie in the Park. It will be held on August 3rd and will feature Spider-man: Into the Spider Verse. Planning is actively underway. Each Rotarian is responsible for selling 20 tickets; please contact Len Bonilla if you need additional tickets or to arrange for payment. We have an impressive line-up of sponsors but are always looking for more community support. Please let Lily Craig know if you have any leads. Stay tuned for schedules and updates in the coming weeks. We will need everyone's help on Aug 3rd; so please save the date!

Regular meetings throughout July will be held at the Lodge.  Any future move to the Women's Club will be announced in advance by Eloise.

She moved to Whittier in her mid-20's, then to the South Bay when she married her husband Michael, and now has planted roots in El Segundo since 2000 to raise their family. She has been a member of the El Segundo Rotary club since 2015 and has served as membership chair and on many committees through the years.

Gilda left the diamond & fine jewelry industry after 16 years and jumped into the Automotive Industry working at Edelbrock Corporation in 1997. She joined Cars full time in 1999, but after her sons were born in 2000, raising identical twins with autism took her away from Cars. Did you know that there are more 7-Eleven's in Japan than anywhere else in the world?

Astonishing isn't it?! Carolyne here. .. I happen to be traveling in Japan right now and as I'm sitting here writing this, in a very old, vintage, authentic Japanese air B&B with lots of wood paneling and fluorescent lighting - our saving grace has been the 7-Eleven just a few doors down providing breakfast and an ATM (and late night wine) for me and my family for the past few days here in Kyoto. They are similar but very different from the stores we see in the USA and feature all kinds of strange and interesting items that can be seen in the link below!

Per Wikipedia: Japan has more 7-Eleven locations than anywhere else in the world, where they often bear the name of its holding company "Seven & I Holdings". Of the 67,480 stores around the globe, 20,700 stores (nearly 31 percent of global stores) are in Japan, with 2,705 stores in Tokyo alone. On September 1, 2005, Seven & I Holdings Co., Ltd., a new holding company, became the parent company of 7-Eleven, Ito-Yokado, and Denny's Japan.

As of July 2019, 7-Eleven has stores in all 47 prefectures of Japan with the opening of 14 new locations in Okinawa Prefecture.

The aesthetics of the store are somewhat different from that of 7-Eleven stores in other countries as the stores offer a wider selection of products and services.

Following the example of other convenience stores in Japan, 7-Eleven has solar panels and LEDs installed in about 1,400 of its stores.

WHO IS PAUL HARRIS?

Paul Harris (April 19, 1868–January 27, 1947) was a Chicago, Illinois, attorney best known for founding Rotary International.

Paul formed the first Rotary club on 23 February 1905 in hopes of capturing in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The Rotary name was derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.

Rotary's popularity spread, and within a decade, clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York to Winnipeg, Canada. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents. The organization adopted the Rotary International name a year later.

As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving club members’ professional and social interests. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self.

By July 1925, Rotary had grown to more than 2,000 clubs and an estimated 108,000 members. The organization's distinguished reputation attracted presidents, prime ministers, and a host of other luminaries to its ranks — among them author Thomas Mann, diplomat Carlos P. Romulo, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, and composer Jean Sibelius.
