Happy New Year! We are recovering from the Holiday festivities and making our way through January and the start of 2020. We were very busy in December with luncheons, parties, float building and more. The new year is looking like a busy one with Malt Madness coming up on March 27th. We are actively planning this event; if you would like to get involved, please contact Dean Seligman for more information. We are looking for sponsors and donors; if you have any leads please follow up with Dean.
January is moving quickly; so far at our first meeting of the year we heard from Carolyne Johnson who spoke briefly about our club's participation with the Rose Parade float for Rotary which won a Tournament award! Big congratulations to the Rose Parade Float Committee and thanks to everyone that participated. We also heard from Brady Connell of Playa Venice Rotary club. Next up on calendar we have Dennis McDonough speaking at the meeting on 1/16 and Elizabeth Bloom on 1/23. Check our page on Facebook for regular updates.

Meeting 1/9/2020
First meeting of 2020! Today we heard a little about the Rotary Rose Parade float which won the Tournament Volunteers award! Great job for participating and helping with the build - Carolyne Johnson, Ed Su, Sean Story, Rebecca Bergen, Eloise Mendez, Andrea Lange, and Fidelmar Coronel! Big shout out to Val Smith for watching Laura for Rebecca.
Our speaker was Brady Connell, the president of the Playa-Venice Rotary club and executive producer of Extreme Makeover - Home Edition on HGTV. We learned a lot about how the program selects candidates and the processes involved in creating a successful makeover. So interesting and what a wonder way to give back to the community!
Rose Parade Float Building
Winner! Rose Parade Tournament Volunteer Award for Most Outstanding display of floral presentation of the Rose Parade Theme "The Power Of Hope" among floats under 35 feet. What an amazing evening working on the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee. Roses, roses, and more roses, every color possible and such beautiful decor and details on all the floats - what incredible works of art. This years theme is Hope Connects the World. A penguin flies across the nations of the world in a demonstration of hope connecting us all. It’s a wonderful and inspiring message that’s meant to bring peace and bridge the gap between mankind.  Special thank you to Eloise, Sean, Andrea, Carolyne, Rebecca, Fidelmar and Ed for your hard work and participation.  🐧🌷💐🌹❄️

Did You Know?                    #Randomfacts

Did you know that Dr. Seuss wrote “Green Eggs and Ham” on a bet that he couldn’t write a book with fifty or fewer distinct words?

The bet was made in 1960 with Bennett Cerf, the co-founder of Random House, and was for $50 (about $382 today).  Despite Dr. Seuss, a.k.a. Theodore Geisel, winning the bet by producing one of his most popular works Green Eggs and Ham using exactly 50 unique words, Cerf never paid up.   Green Eggs and Ham went on to be Geisel’s best selling work, so he made out on it anyways.

JANUARY IS VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

During January, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service. Discussions on vocational service can lead to projects that not only develop the ethical consciousness and vocational skills of Rotarians but also the talents within their communities. Vocational Service Month is an opportunity to begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects.
