Meeting 9/30/21

On September 30th, we were pleased to host Rotary 5280 District Governor Guity Javid. All members of the board presented updates regarding their areas and highlighted the achievements of our club. Guity then spoke, and identified the club highlights that resonated with her. She explained about why she is a Rotarian starting with a history of Paul Harris and the founding of Rotary.  She connected this history to her current goals for the district and that of Rotary International, and discussed how our club is already helping and provided suggestions for more involvement. She completed her visit with recognition of outstanding members and a review of Rotary causes.

First Rotary Service Project

In 1907, the Chicago Rotary Club initiated its first public service project- the construction of public toilets in Chicago. In addition to improving sanitation, the project also promoted business. The public toilets allowed shoppers (primarily women at the time) to spend longer time in downtown Chicago (rather than having to go home if nature called). This project showed that when service is provided, business can be enhanced. It also established Rotary as the world's first service organization.
What does Rotary mean to me?        #ProudRotarians
My name is Jim Miller. I am an El Segundo resident, business owner at AsteroGroup.com and
avid learner of new things. A few months ago, I was searching for ways to get more involved
with El Segundo and to give back. After a lot of research, all of my arrows pointed to the Rotary
Club and decided to reach out.
I connected with the soon-to-be president elect who met me for a drink. That tequila was
strong! Wait, it was actually tea. We sat in the courtyard across from Blue Butterfly and shared
our goals about being involved with Rotary and what that meant to each of us. To me it meant
giving not just money, but time. Time is our most valuable asset and certainly the most difficult
one for me to offer. This agreed with the club’s direction and after a few meetings I was sold.
Rotary is a place to really learn, grow and give. We learn weekly at each meeting with an array
of different speakers and topics. We grow by meeting new people, both inside and outside of
the Rotary Club. And we give often; as often as we can.
In my short few months, I have poured wine at a fundraiser, scraped and taped benches at
Center Street Elementary where my son is a student, and am signed up for two upcoming
Saturdays for different causes. I’m very busy with my family and business but the work that the
Club does is very rewarding and I don’t want to imagine a world without them.

October is Economic and Community Development Month

Nearly 1.4 billion employed people live on less than $1.25 a day. Our members promote economic and community development and reduce poverty in underserved communities through training, well-paying jobs, and access to financial management institutions. Projects range from providing people with equipment to vocational training. Our members work to strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.
