MOVIE IN THE PARK is just 2 weeks away. Things are coming together but we still need additional member support to cover open shifts at the event. Please contact Lily Craig if you are available to volunteer that day and have not been assigned something to do! We need your help!
Have you sold your tickets yet? Each Rotarian is responsible for selling 20 tickets; please contact Len Bonilla if you need additional tickets or to arrange for payment. Need a place to sell them? Come visit the Rotary info table at the farmers market on Thursday August 1st and see if you can sell them all to the public! Last year we sold a lot of tickets this way. Want to donate them? Consider donating them to one of the wonderful organizations that the Rotary supports! A little kindness goes a long way and so many people would appreciate the chance to attend our fun event.
This week's meeting will feature Scott Houston of the West Basin Water District. Ronny Sanchez will give us a short craft talk and will provide raffle prizes. Hope to see you there!

Frank Glynn
Having grown up in Dublin Ireland, Frank escaped to the US in 1984, some months later his parents and 9 siblings finally noticed that he wasn’t showing up for dinner and sent out a search party. They discovered that he was living undercover in a convent in Gulfport Mississippi and working for a mysterious architectural firm owned and run by Henry “Buddy” Fountain. Having been in southern Mississippi for nine months, Frank had finally figured out what the locals were saying and they were just beginning to understand his Irish brogue…it was time to leave. He packed up his Volkswagen rabbit with all his belongings and headed for tinsel town. As he crested the hill in Pomona on an October afternoon, as far as the eye could see, laid out before him was a dense blanket of smog but it was too late to turn back.
Frank job hopped in LA for a few years, learning the ropes and driving ridiculous commutes. He had to relearn everything in Imperial measurements (all his knowledge of meters and litres were useless now) and got licensed as an Architect. He set up his own company, hung out his shingle and vowed to make the world a better place, architecturally that is.
Having had to outrun an alligator stepping off his sailboat in Mississippi, Frank relished the reptile free environment of the west coast and joined the California Yacht Club which became his operations base for all things maritime. In a moment of madness he was elected to serve as Commodore in 2007 and distinguished himself by not involving the Club in any serious litigation. Somewhere along the way, Frank was introduced to rowing (sculling) which involves going backwards as quickly as possible.
Frank has 4 very close relatives that know him as “Dad can I have a…” with assorted postfixes such as phone, twenty dollar bill, pizza, car, another phone etc. They are Rory, Gavin, Niall and Kylie. Frank met the love of his life standing in the middle of a parking lot minding his own business. Susan asked him the time, and a couple of years later they were married….and still are…happily…no, very happily indeed.
As an Architect, Frank has a style that is both unique, individualistic and inspirational, and if you caught the obvious contradiction it just means you haven’t fallen asleep yet. His work is so inspirational that it has caused people to move the better neighborhoods to get away – not really I just made that up.
Franks Rotary life began when he was weeding in his back garden. His back door neighbor popped his head over the fence and asked him if he would like to join Rotary. Not having learnt how to say No he was soon a member. Back then in 1996, the club was still mostly men so the jokes were better. Having run out of excuses, Frank was elected President in 2016 – 20 years after joining, a record that Ed Su is trying his best to beat.

Other notable things about Frank – He runs Marathons (15 so far); he is vice Chair of the El Segundo Ed Foundation; he is on the ESUSD School Facilities Committee; he has a Tesla (don’t kill me Lily); he is building a house in ES as a side hustle; he is a vegan but not one of those militant ones that throws paint at people.

Did You Know?                    #Randomfacts
Did you know that Buzz Aldrin peed his pants on the moon?  In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, here are 5 interesting facts you may not have known about NASA’s Apollo 11 mission.
  1. Buzz Aldrin boasted about being the first person to "piss his pants on the moon."
  2. The first moon meal was bacon and coffee.
  3. The Saturn V rocked that launched the Apollo 11 astronauts into space is still the tallest, heaviest, and most powerful rocket ever flown.
  4. Today, the flags planted on the moon have almost certainly lost their color and are probably disintegrating.
  5. The crew had to sign customs forms declaring "moon rock and moon dust samples" upon their return to the US.

THE OFFICIAL ROTARY FLAG

An official flag was formally adopted by Rotary International at the 1929 Convention in Dallas, Texas. The Rotary flag consists of a white field with the official wheel emblem emblazoned in gold in the center of the field The four depressed spaces on the rim of the Rotary wheel are colored royal blue. The words "Rotary" and "International' printed at the top and bottom depressions on the wheel rim are also gold. The shaft in the hub and the key way of the wheel are white.
The first official Rotary flag reportedly was flown in Kansas City Missouri, in January 1915. In 1922 a small Rotary flag was carried over the South Pole by Admiral Richard Byrd, a member of the Winchester, Virginia Rotary Club. Four years later, the admiral carried a Rotary flag in his expedition to the North Pole.
Some Rotary clubs use the official Rotary flag as a banner at club meetings. In these instances it is appropriate to print the words "Rotary Club" above the wheel symbol, and the name of the city, state or nation below the emblem.
The Rotary flag is always prominently displayed at the World Headquarters as well as at all conventions and official events of Rotary International.
