Valerie Smith
ES Rotary President Elect for 2020-2021
From 18 years as a Realtor to 18 years as a Tax Professional, Val has lots of experience to bring to the table. She also worked for Brunswick Corp for 26 years as a Bilingual Secretary and was the Director of Purchasing of the Bowling Division. She graduated from DePaul University in Chicago. Her interests include singing, swimming, and spending time with her family who all live in So Cal.
She serves as the Sales Liaison of three great brands: 1-800-Got-Junk, Hazawaytoday.com, and You Move Me. These brands help you rid your home of junk and hazardous waste and also move you locally. The companies are based out of El Segundo and the owner, her son Drew Boyles, is the Mayor of El Segundo and has been in business over 15 years. Val loves working in the family business and enjoys representing these great brands to Realtors since she understands the real estate profession and knows that these services can be very beneficial to them.
Did You Know?     #Randomfacts
Did you know the 1939 novel Gadsby is the longest book ever published that doesn’t contain the letter ‘e’?

Back in 1939, American author Ernest Vincent Wright published Gadsby, a 50,000-word novel that doesn’t use the letter ‘e’ once. What’s more, it’s not the only novel that ditched the letter. Author Georges Perec also wrote the French-language book La Disparition without the letter ‘e’ in 1969. That’s even more astounding when you consider that the letter ‘e’ is the most commonly used letter in the English (and French!) language.

ROTARY'S WHEEL EMBLEM
A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization and Movement." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the "Rotary International Association." A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.
